Culturally Responsive Music Teaching

Culturally responsible music teaching (CRMT) in the United States has 13 facets which are creativity-based, musically diverse, and result in enjoyable teaching and learning. A recent study by Bennett published in the Journal of Research in Music Education described CRMT is a complex and multifaceted concept that requires teachers to be aware of their own cultural biases and to be willing to engage with students’ cultural frames. The study also found that CRMT can have a positive impact on students’ music education experience by empowering them in their own construction of knowledge and art.

One of the key findings of the study is that CRMT requires teachers to be creative and flexible in their teaching practices. Teachers need to be able to adapt their teaching methods to meet the needs of students from different cultural backgrounds. This may involve incorporating music from different cultures into the curriculum, using different teaching strategies, and creating a safe and inclusive learning environment.

Another important finding of the study is that CRMT requires teachers to be musically diverse. Teachers need to have a broad knowledge of different musical styles and genres, and be able to incorporate this knowledge into their teaching. This may involve learning about different musical traditions, attending concerts and performances, and collaborating with other musicians from different cultural backgrounds.

The study also found that CRMT requires teachers to create an enjoyable and engaging learning environment. Teachers need to be able to create a sense of community in the classroom, and to make learning fun and exciting for students. This may involve using games, activities, and other interactive teaching methods.

The study identified several challenges and barriers that music teachers may face when implementing CRMT. These include a lack of resources, time constraints, and resistance from students or parents. The study suggests that teachers need to be proactive in addressing these challenges, and to seek out support from colleagues, administrators, and other resources.

Overall, the study provides valuable insights into the nature of CRMT and its impact on students’ music education experience. The study highlights the importance of cultural responsibility in music teaching, and provides practical strategies for teachers to incorporate CRMT into their teaching practices. The study also identifies several challenges and barriers that teachers may face when implementing CRMT, and suggests
